With North-South Corridor running through it, Jhansi has emerged as a commercial hub in recent years. The city developed around a fort that goes by its name and has a turbulent history of struggle for independence. Lying at state border, the city is often used by the passengers as a transit point to Khajuraho.

Down the Lane :


History of Jhansi is associated with Rani Laxmibai who sacrificed her life while fighting with British. Her resistance to the foreign power became an example of bravery and fortitude for others. In eighteenth century, king Chhatrasal with the help of Marathas succeeded in preventing the excursions by Mughal emperors. But in the beginning of nineteenth century, Pune Peshwa transferred the power to British. After the death of Laxmibai in revolt of 1857, the city became part of British territory. After independence, it was amalgamated into United Provinces.

Attractions :

Jhansi Fort :


Located within the periphery of the city, the fort is a symbol of dauntlessness. The entrance can be made through one of its ten gates. The fort welcomes you via its Shiva and Ganesha temples. A museum called Rani Mahal is a place with the premises that comprises of 6 halls and a number of corridors. Its Darbar Hall is adorned with different types of motifs. Over the arches, you will notice peacock patterns. The Mahal was a residing place for Laxmibai. The fort occupies 15 acres of land. Its mighty walls are further strengthened by moat. On the occasion of Jhansi Mahotsava, the fort becomes the venue of art and culture. Held in January/February, this fair is attended by renowned personalities.

State Museum :

With in fort premises, State Museum is a storehouse of strikingly beautiful paintings, terracotta, historic photographs, dresses, and weapons. Besides a painting of Laxmibai, there are images of famous cricketers and other eminent personalities.

Maha Lakshmi Temple :

This shrine of Maha Lakshmi was constructed in 18th century. The structure stands near Laxmi Tal and is visited by a number of devotees from the nearby places.

Chathri :

Near Laxmi Tal, a tomb of Gangadhar Rao, husband of Rani Laxmibai, is present. After king died in 1853, Rani build this structure in his remembrance.

Ganesh Mandir :

This sacred place is important as it is the venue where Rani got married to Jhansi ruler Gangadhar Rao.

Searching an accommodation at Jhansi is not a big issue as retiring rooms are available at reasonable prices. Hotel Pujan is another budget option; it is present on Gwalior road. At Central Hotel, rooms of several types are available. Hotel Prakash provides rooms with facilities of hot water and television. Located near River Betwa, Orchha is a nice tourist destination. This sacred city has a temple of Raja Ram and was built by a Bundela king. Its distance from Jhansi is merely 18 kilometers.

Known for its natural surroundings and monuments, Shivpuri is situated at about 100 kilometers from the destination.
