Barauni, the census town lying in Begusarai district, is one of the industrial towns that exist in Bihar. An important rail head, it connects the state to major metropolitan cities of India viz Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai. The town covers an area of about 1918 square kilometers and comprises of 5 divisions, namely, Begusarai, Manjhaul, Ballai, Bakhari, and Teghara. There are a number of rivers that traverse the district and render it fertile for crop- production.
Economy :
The economy of Barauni is dependent upon its plethora of industrial units including a thermal power station and an oil refinery. Hundred of small scale units are functional here and contribute to thee overall development of the state. As far as agriculture is concerned, several crops like rice, wheat, gram, maize, urad, arhar, masur, tobacco, chilly, potato, tomato, sunflower, and oilseeds.
Attractions :
Barauni Refinery : The prime attraction at Barauni is its refinery located at about 125 km from the City of Patna. Constructed with the joint efforts of Romania and Russia, the refinery carries the current capacity of 6 MMPTA. A number of projects and expansions envisioned after its completion in 1965 have been completed successfully. The initial motive for its construction was to process sweet crude oil of refineries at Assam. By the efforts of authorities, several eco-friendly techniques have been initiated; these help in keeping pollution under check.
Thermal Power Station : Considered among the biggest power plants that exist in Bihar, this station employs coal-based energy. Every year, about 320 Mega Watt of power is produced by it. The place is accessible both from Patna Airport and rail head at Barauni.
Academic Institutes : The city has a number of academic institutes that are scattered all over. There are several notable schools as well as colleges that are functional here.
