Dhanbad is the mining city of Jharkhand and is also the largest one of the state. Bestowed with a plethora of coal mines, the city is flanked by the districts of Purulia, Giridhar, and Bokaro. It is due to the vast coal deposits that it is also known by the name 'Coal City'. In fact, the presence of abundant natural resources has played a significant role in generating revenues. The industries that have found stronghold here are Tata Steel, Bharat Coking Coal, and many others.
Maithon Dam : This water reservoir is the biggest one of DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation). Constructed on the banks of river Barakar, the dam is supposed to be a barrier to flood. Its underlying power station is unique in itself and one of its kinds in Asia. In the vicinity, you will see Kalyaneshwari Temple and a tranquil lake that attract a good crowd of tourist. Within the lake, a rest house has also been constructed on an island. You can have a great time enjoying fishing and boating in water. Pay a visit to an avian sanctuary located nearby.
Panchet Dam : As you go 50 kilometers off from Dhanbad, you will come across Panchet Dam. Built on River Damodar, the dam carries a height of 22155 feet. A hydroelectric power station has been built near it.
Jharia : This colliery center is located within city's suburbs. The presence of numerous coal mines that have been serving the city are the main attraction of the place.
Bokaro : This city located at about 47 kilometers from the city. Famous for its steel plants, Bokaro is the major industrial center of the state. Located ideally near Damodar River, Bokaro houses major industries like SAIL. There are many other places of interest here which include City Park, Garga Dam, and Cooling Pond. For the sake of tourists, a multitude of guest houses have been constructed here.
Topchanchi Lake : The lake is present on National Highway 2 and is known for green hills and deep forests that surround it. Spend a day picnicking here along with your family and friends.
Charak Pathar : This village is apart of the development block named Govindpur. A white stone belonging to antiquity is the center of attraction here. The village gas derived its name from thus ancient stone.
Chati Gopalpur : Another lovely village that can be visited while on a tour to Dhanbad is Gopalpur. Two pillars belonging to Mauryan Emperor Ashoka are nice to look at. The village is a part of Govindpur.
Meva : Here too, you will be able to have a glimpse of Ashoka's stone image and ancient pillars.
Panrra : Named after Pandavas, Panrra is a small village that rests in Nirsa/Chirkunda Block. It is said that Pandavas brothers spent a short period of exile here. Within the village premises, you will come across a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here Shiva is worshipped in the form of Pandeweshar Mahadev.
