Tiger Reserve of Palamau is one of the main reserve that comes under the Project Tiger. Palamau Tiger Reserve sways over an area of (1026 sqkm).This untamed wilderness is popular for its magnificent terrain, undulating and scenic terrain.
This Tiger reserve covers the (226sqkm) Betla National Park that makes the middle area of this reserve, and (980 sqkm) Palamau Sanctuary. There are (107 villages) in the safeguarded area. The middle area is disseminated in two parts- the Satellite core and actual core. This area was affirmed a (National Park) in the month of September, (1989).
Wildlife :
This wildlife sanctuary is under the (Indo Malayan) kingdom and is eminent for its unique fauna and flora. The animals, which roam in the jungle, include wolves, jungle cats, leopards, tigers, and wild dogs. Amongst the herbivores, there are mouse deer, 4 horned antelope and sloth bear.
Humans and Beast within the Reserve :
Villagers who exist inside the (Palamau Tiger Reserve) are mainly tribal, constituting diverse racial groups like Birija, Chero, Kherwar, Munda etc.The tribes respects wildlife and live with complete accord with them.
Wildlife Population :
Population of (elephants) in Palamau Tiger Reserve has augmented considerably in the past (50 years). Preceding to the year (1920), this region had no population of elephants but the twenty elephants freed by Surguja’s Maharaja turned untamed, consequently increasing in their number. Presently the elephant count goes beyond (104 elephants). |
