Chandel city of Manipur occupies the southeastern portion and was earlier a part of Tengnoupal district. Fringed by districts of Churachandpur, Thoubal and Ukhrul, the city shares borders with Myanmar. There are about 20 tribes that are known to inhabit the area. Though there are many communities that exist here, the area is quiet sparsely populated.

The tribes that are known to inhabit Chandel include Thadou, Monsang, Lamkang, Anal, Maring, Chothe, Paite, and Monsang. The city is also inhabited by other communities like Muslims, Punjabis, Tamils, Biharis, and Bengalis.

Tengnoupal :

Located at about 20 kilometers from the destination, Tengnoupal is the elevated portion of the road connecting India and Myanmar. From here, you can have the entire panoramic view of Manipur valley. The natural surroundings are fantastic and award you to gather a few cherishable moments.

Moreh :

This town is located 70 kilometers away from Chandel; this commercial town attracts visitors from nearby areas. The cross border trade activities have made it a Moreh an important town of North East.

Art :

Numerous dances and festivals are part of Chandel's culture. The important dance forms that are quite popular in the district are Paite, Thadou Kuki, and Tarao War Dance. In Tarao, tribesmen present a number of dance forms. The dances let you have a glimpse of exotic culture, customary practices, and colorful but unique dresses. All these captivate you by their charm and antiquity.

Among the festivals that people of Chandel celebrate include Anal Festival, Kuki Festival, Naga Festival, and Monsang Festival.

Bio-Diversity :

There are several types of flora as well as fauna that you can expect to find here. Different varieties of ornamental plants, orchids, and medicinal plants exist here. Thoiding Amuba, Khut-Chappi, Heining, Terapaibi are a few herbs and shrubs that are found in abundance. Place is home to the only Indian ape, Hooklok Gibbon. You can see other rare animals like Stumped Tailed macaque, Clouded Leopard, Golden Cat, Elephant, and Black Bear. Bisons and Sambhars can be seen strolling in night. Thai Pangolins and Sun Bear are other elusive animal species that are sighed occasionally. Among the avifauna that is known to exist here includes pheasant, peafowl, and other fowls.
