Manipur can be considered as the land of festivals. The celebrations and the Merriments are on through the year. There are cycles of festival in Manipur. You cannot see or describe Manipur without a festival in a month. Manipur is also well known as a symbol for the tradition, culture, social and religious ambition. It removes and heals all the problems along with the physical diversion, mental recreation and the emotional balance that helps one to enhance and relax for the further life. People residing in Manipur are very religious and strongly believe in religion and tradition.
In local Mizoram, Kut generally means festival. There are in all three festivals namely, Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut and the Pawl Kut. All these festivals are celebrated with great joy and are well connected to the activities of agriculture.
The festivals are decorated with dance and the grand feast. Chap char Kut celebrates the beginning of the spring. The festival begins with the Kut puipate or the inaugural ceremony which is then followed by the Then Katna or the particular time when all the members of the dance group arrange themselves in the stadium or the stage. Once the Hnihna begins, the old members of the families that dressed up in the form of traditional costumes portray the way the tribal people lived and how they used to stay in ancient age. They look amazing in this costumes which is known as Kut Rore.
This is then followed with the various tribal performances. These performances are done with the gelp of the Bamboos or Cheraw. The function marks its end with the Then Thumna or even the performances from the singers of the region and the audience crowd joins them in the performance and enjoys the scenic beauty and the religious environment that is created in this region.
Chapchar Kut is celebrated during the March month. It has its beginning in theseason of spring and nature is showing its beautiful color in this particular season. There are number of festival that lies in the various part of Mizoram and they start the preparation of Chapchar Kut. And hence it is well known as the festival of Happiness. It is believed that this is the most important and traditional festival of the Mizoram and is celebrated with grand splendour and pomp.
There are three main festivals namely Pawl Kut, Mim Kut and Chapchar Kut.
The chapchar Kut is one of the most traditional and oldest festivals of Mizoram. Farmers cut bamboo from their field and are brought for the jhums or for the seasonal farming. It is the season when they wait and then afterwards they chop the bamboo heaps to desiccated below the sun before burning is describes as the Chapchar. Kut means festival. And this is the season when farmers have no option to do but to cut the bamboos and make them dry. Hence, this festival is known as the Cahpchar Kut.
People wear colorful clothes and carry the traditional look along with the beautiful hats that are made up of beads and the parrot’s feather. During this festival, they do not wear any kind of shoes as they respect the land as well as the festival. The traditional dance of Bamboo is performed by the localities where only the women perform and the men watch on the grounds and beats each other with the bamboos.
Chapchar is celebrated in all the Mizo Villages and it is considered as the most important traditional and cultural festival in the society. Every village in Mizoram has their own way of celebration to suit their particular time and idioms and the ehos that is preserved every year. The celebration is carried for 4 to 5 days.
This is one of the colorful festival of Mizoram which is known as Chapchar Kut which has became more popular now a days and it is full of gazette holidays on that particular days.
The festivals in Mizoram are grandly celebrated and all the people live with brotherhood. The singing and dancing in the village makes them feel light and that the way out for their problems. Hence, all the festivals here are equally important and they mark the beginning during the spring season with all the cultural activities. |
