HISTORY |
|
Meghalaya has an eventful history where several incidents have occurred to make the state autonomous. It was previously within the boundaries of Assam. The population of the state has a vast majority of tribes and the major tribes are Khasi, Garo and Jaintia. These tribal communities had independent rule over several different parts of the state.
The boundaries of the state have experienced several changes since British Raj in India. During the rule of British in 19th century, the state was under the British Empire and was later on made a part of Eastern Bengal and Assam. This happed due to the much talked about Bengal partition. Later on in 1935, the state was put under the state of Assam. The state enjoyed semi-independence because of a treaty signed between Meghalaya and British rulers.
During 1971, the state was given the autonomy and was recognized as an independent state named Meghalay thro8ugh passing of a bill in parliament. |
