The Belghar sanctuary is one of the prime tourist destinations in Orissa. Every year scores of tourists and nature lovers who visit Orissa do make at least one visit to this beautiful Natural landscape. They come here from various parts of the world to get a glimpse of the wild elephants. The sanctuary gets its name from Belghar a place which is 158 km away from the city of Phulbani. The sanctuary covers an area of 16, 17, 446 acres of land and is located in the district of Kandharmal. The sanctuary is located at a minimum altitude of 2255 feet above the sea level.

Apart from Wild elephants one can also find a variety of mammals such as the deer as well as wide bird species and tribal communities. The Dogra Khond is one of the dominant tribal communities that inhabit the Belghar Sanctuary. They practice agriculture and use products that yielded by the Belghar forests.

The Belghar Sanctuary is a tropical deciduous forest and covers a large area of the Kandhamal. It comprises of thick wooded trees that are very tall in height.

The Belghar Sanctuary has played a key role in preserving and protecting endangered species which are on the verge of extinction.
