Location : It is located in the Kendarpara District

Notification Date : On the 22nd of April the National park was notified on 30 October 1988.

Area :
672.00 sq. Km. It includes national park near145.00 sq. km

Forest Type : Mangroves, Bani, Sundari Rai, Keruan Sisu and Hental etc.

Number of Villages and total Population :
381 villages of 1.96 lakh people

Wild Animals to be Seen : Leopard, Hyena, Wild boar, cat fishing cat jungle Cat, Spotted Deer, Dolphins King Cobra, Sambhar, Dolphins King Cobra, porcupine, Pythons, Dolphins King Cobra and number of Saltwater Crocodiles, Including Partial White, Terrapins Marine turtles, kingfishers ,Crocodile Water monitor lizard, Wood peckers, hornbills and the Bar headed goose.

Suitable Period to Visit :
Winter and early summer months October to mid April.

Convenient Approach : The head quarters of the Division administering the sanctuary is located at the Rajnagar

There are a number of nature lovers and adventure seekers who wish to explore the wonderful wildlife of the country. In fact some of them may even want to go as far as Orissa to do the same, as it has some of the most beautiful Wild life reserves on Earth. Once such wild life reserve is the Bhitarkanika Wildlife sanctuary, In this day and age when natural flora and fauna are disappearing due to the rapid felling of trees many people across India as well as across the globe try to visit places such as the Bhitarkanika which helps them in a big way.

Initially until the year 1953 the land on which Bhitarkanika exits was once owned by a rich Zamindar of Kanika. It is located near coastal area of Gahirmatha. The reserve has gained considerable reputation in recent years and is known for its bio-diversity. It has set of 70 different types of mangrove trees which are crisscrossed with a number of canals, creeks and rivulets that submerge the forests in high tide. The reserve has played a significant role in protecting the estuarine bunch of crocodiles.

A number of wild habitat breed in Bhitarkanika Wildlife sanctuary this ranges from Rhesus Monkey, Spotted Deer, and Sambars etc. The Sankhua crocodiles are considered to be the pride and possession of this reserve.

One can reach Bhitarkanika Sanctuary without much difficulty by using the waterways such as Ragnagar, Chandabali etc. The Bhitarkanika wildlife Sanctuary is open to public at any time of the year and those and one can easily visit these places via rail.

One can assured of thrilling experience once you go to this wonderful place.

One of the prominent Festivals that are celebrated here each year is the Agni Utsav. This is the time when girls from every household gather straw in huge bundles and clean their village every seventh day of the week.

The direction of the crop is said to predict the next year’s crop. It it shows a westward tilt it means that year will help in good crops.
