Transport :
Sikkim is devoid of any airport solely because of the rugged terrain. However, airport project at Pakyong is supposed to get accomplished in 2011. Nonetheless, a regular helicopter service is available at Sikkim connecting Gangtok to Bagdogra. It operates once a day and carries only four people.
The nearest railway stations from Sikkim are situated at new Jalpaiguri and Siliguri. However, the state government has taken up a project named New Sikkim Railway Project that will connect Rangpo town in Sikkim with Sevok. The project is due for completion in 2015.
The state has two national highways, National Highway 31 and National Highway 31A, that connects Siliguri to Gangtok. There are bus and other transport services like trucks that move within Sikkim regularly. The road connectivity within Sikkim is comparatively better than rail and flights. |
