West Bengal  Places to see HISTORY

The history of the state dates back to the stone age era as stone tools of that era have been excavated from West Bengal. Reference of this state has been found in Greek hisroty where theame of west Bengal was refered and Gangahrd ( meaning land with Ganges in its heart).

The first independent king of the state is Shashanka who ruled the land from 7th century. After Shashanka’s reign Pala dynasty came to the throne of Bengal and ruled the area for almost four centuries. During 12th century influences of Islam was noted in West Bengal through Sufi missionaries. The spread of Islam was however very slow which got boosted subsequently by invasion of Muslim ruler Bakhtiar Khilji in 1206.

15th century marked the arrival of British traders in Bengal. Ater defeating Siraj ud-Daulah, the last Nawab to rule West Bengal independently, in the Battle of Plassey in 1757 British took over Bengal. The Bengal Presidency was created by British in 1765. The population of the stat and the agricultural land suffered seriously during the great famine tat started from 1769 and continued after 1770. Resistance against British people to make an independent India was thoroughly put up by the freedom fighters of West Bengal. The freedom fighters like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Khudiram Bose, Baghajatin and many more played a great role in India freedom fight.
