Himachal Pradesh has a number of natural as well as man made lakes, rivers, streams, reservoirs which are filled with snow clad mountains and glaciers. The amount of water available is huge which gives the opportunity for a number of people who love water sports. Angling and River Rafting are the most common water sports enjoyed by the people. The Sutlej near Shimla, The Chandrabhaga in Lahaul, Beas near Kullu and the Ravi near Chamba offers great experience of water rafting. The opportunity for angling is best offered by valleys of Pabbar and Sangla.
The water sports in Himalayas offers a great experience which makes a mark and will make you remember it for lifetime. There are many people coming every year to enjoy this from all over the world. The water sports in Himalayas are popular all over the world and attract many people. People who are non Swimmers can also enjoy these sports in the low rides or in gentle rapid water.
Water Sports in Himachal Pradesh :
Angling is the best thing to be enjoyed in the snow fed rivers for people who love water sports like Angling. In the beautiful streams of Himalayas, the rainbow and Brown trout are to be found which is acclaimed to be the best water sports in the world. For fishing there are number of sports in the upper part of Rohru in Pabbar valley. Trout hatchery is done in Chirgaon and other similar places are Sandasu, Mandil, Seema, Dhamvari and Tikri which are very close to Rohru
Trout is also allowed in Sangla Valley of Bapsa River of Kinnaur. Luhandi, Tikkar, The Puran Hatchery are some of the best spots nearby to enjoy the best angling. The best time to enjoy trout fishing is from November to end of January. Mahseer can be enjoyed best from June to end of July in normal water.
There would be fishing charges which would be nominal and for trout fishing, license would be required which would be easily taken from the District Fisheries Officer in Kullu or Manali. In Mandi district in Barot and Chirgaon in Shimla, respective Fisheries officer can provide you the license for fishing in Uhl and Pabbar. The license for Mahaseer fishing is provided from the Fisheries officer at Dhameta, Dehra, Haripur, Jwali, Dadasiba, and Barali or in Palampur, the Assistant Fisheries officer can also provide you the license
River Rafting :
River Rafting is a popular sport among tourist which gives you the oppurnity to go in every corner of the valley with rapid water flowing. The rubber dinghy is inflatable which is used to enjoy the sport and is provided by the State. It is also called White Water Rafting. People from many countries come to enjoy this sport.
In Lahaul there is Chandrabhaga, The Sutlej River is near Shimla, The Ravi River is near Chamba and in Kullu there is the Beas River that gives great opportunity to experience this sport. People who are non swimmers can also enjoy this white water rafting in some gentle flows of water. This sport cannot be enjoyed in the monsoon and in winters as they take a break due to the climate.
Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in collaboration offers a year long activities including water skiing, swimming, surfing, rowing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking. The course which is conducted includes three levels beginners, intermediate, advanced.
In Bilaspur Gobind Sagar Lake, near Dalhousie the Chamera Lake and the Pandoh Lake on the National Highway of Mandi-Kullu offers similar activities which can be fully enjoyed by the tourists. Himachal Tourism and other private sector companies offer courses in river rafting.
The things which are not allowed or to be avoided during these sports are chappal, heel shoes, t-shirt, salwaar kameez, track suit trousers, cotton trousers.
