Dharamshala is located amidst the enchanting sceneries presented by Dhualdhar hills. Situated high over the rugged terrain of Kangra Valley, this tourist attraction is laced with mesmerizing beauty. Depending upon the topography of the place, it is broadly divided into lower and upper regions. A home to Dalai Lama, the spot looks immensely picturesque and is covered entirely with deep dense forests of deodar and pine trees. Embellished with beautiful hills, tea gardens, and snow-covered peaks, it forms a popular summer retreat to the tourists. The place is ideal for those who want to leave all their worries behind and spend their vacation leisurely.

Behind Name :

The word 'Dharamshala' in Hindi stands for a hub of religion. Associated with spirituality, the place attracts a big crowd of devotees who arrive here to visit its plethora of Temples and other pilgrimage destinations.

Tibetan Exile :

Established in the year 1959, this exile became the residing place of the Dalai Lama who had fled from Tibet and settled in McLeodganj. This place was a popular summer retreat during the colonial rule. Since 19th century, the place has been frequented by a large number of Tibetan immigrants. Revered by both Hindu and Buddhist devotees, the place saw the establishment of several monasteries and other religious shrines. Tenzin Gyatso, the then Dalai lama, established a spacious library in 1970 that housed a number of invaluable Tibetan works. More than 80000 manuscripts that are related to the history, Culture, and political conditions of Tibet are placed here.

Trekking :

There are a number of trekking trails that are present at Dharamshala. Many of these lead the trekkers to Chamba district and within the precincts of Ravi valley. The path enroute comprises of trees of rhododendron, oak, pine, and deodar; it is laced with charming water streams, Waterfalls, and glaciers. An alternative route that you can follow is Toral pass. It initiates at Tang Narwana and is situated at about 10 kilometers from the destination.

Attractions :

McLeodganj : This lovely attraction of Dharamshala is filled with a number of restaurants, residential places, and shops selling antiquities. This, along with Tibetan institutes, lends esteemed importance to McLeodganj. Another attraction here is a Buddha temple that stands facing the residing place of Dalai Lama. A center of visual arts, TIPA, is a hub of music and dance; a number of theatrical traditions are preserved here. Its folk opera festival is the highlight and attracts tourists in large numbers.

Bhagsunag Falls : Bhagsunag is a scenic village that attracts the tourists by its salubrious weather and a lovely waterfall. This tourist's attraction of McLeodganj is an idyllic place for picnicking. A small dining place along with a cafeteria is also present here where you can gorge on some of the delicious food items. The calming sceneries presented by Himalayan hills revitalize your lost energies.

War Memorial : Perched within the scenic surroundings, War Memorial was built to commemorate all those who sacrificed their life for the sake of the motherland.

Jwalamukhi Temple : This sacred temple of Himachal Pradesh is located 56 kilometers away from Dharamshala. Beautified by a dome and several pinnacles, the temple is distinctive for not housing any sort of idol in its premises. Instead, a blue flame continuously burns inside and is supposed to be representing the goddess. The dome was a gift from Mughal emperor Akbar while a large bell of brass was contributed by a ruler of Nepal. One of the doors of the temple is made up of silver while the dome is covered with gold.

Attractions Nearby :

Lord Elgin's' Memorial : It is the grave of Lord Elgin who was the British Viceroy. The tomb was built in 1863. In the vicinity is Kunal Pathri, a sacred temple. It is dedicated to Kapaleshwari. Its interior is decorated with lovely carvings.

Dal Lake : This attraction around Dharamshala rests among trees of deodar. The place is ideal for spending time with family and friends while relaxing amidst charming beauty.

Dharmkot : As you go 11 kilometers from the city, you will reach another picturesque place called Dharmkot. It offers enchanting views of Kangra and Dhauladhar.

Nurpur : Housing a fort of antiquity, Nurpur is located 66 kilometers from the destination. Named after Nur Jahan, the wife of Mughal emperor Jehangir, this attraction also shelters a temple devoted to Brij Raj.

Trilokpur : Here, you will be able to see cave temples that are devoted to Lord Shiva. The additional attraction consists of a grand hall belonging to Lehna Singh, the then governor of Kangra.

Trekking :

There are many types of treks that are present here and allow the trekkers to enjoy amidst breathtaking sceneries. Treks to places like Trikund, Indabas, and Macchetar can be pursued. The way up to Macchetar is not an easy one; enroute, you will see resplendent peaks of Pir Panjal.

Accommodations :

Many stylish and fine hotels are present here. Among the three starred hotels that are present here include Anand Palace, Asian Plaza, Jukaso Palace, Karnika Resort, Dev Cottage, Surya Resort etc. Chonor House, Hari Kothi, White Haven Estate are the heritage hotels. If you do not want to spend too much on accommodation, budget options are available. A few of these are Glenmoor Cottages, Hotel Bhagsu, Hotel Dhauladhar, Hotel Vatika, and Snow Crest Inn.
