Mountaineering in Ladakh :

Mountaineering in Ladakh provides a rich scope for the attempt of adventure activities amongst landscapes of rugged and breathtaking beauty. The most popular adventurous sport over here is river rafting, trekking and mountaineering.

Trekking :

Trekking includes daylong walks, going to mountain slopes to pay a visit to isolated villages, monastic settlements or to the never-ending passes to enjoy the sheer lunar mountainscapes,or to the transmountains, which includes weeks of walking, camping .Trekking to Darcha in (Lahaul) from Lamayuru in the Indus valley takes approximately three weeks. Almost all the routes cross the Zanskar range, which cuts across the Indus valley.

The ten days Lamayuru to Padum and the Stok to Khangri are the two most popular treks. The part of the Indus and Shayok are nowadays usable for trekking.

Season :

The traditional season begins from June - mid October. The localized treks inside the Indus valley are attempted also in the month of May. Some trek routes are worthy only in the autumn as throughout the summers the waterbed becomes a turbulent water streams for e.g.: 13 days (Hemis-Markha-Padum trek).The gateway to the Zanskar valley during the winter season is frozen, as a result it is very exciting for the trekkers , this thrilling route is called as Chaddar.

If you are interested in trekking then you can ask any of the tour operators to design a trekking program according to your budget, which are based at Kargil, Padum and Leh.

The one planning to go for trekking should always take the help of a travel agency as they take care of al the major requirements that include Provisions, Camping gear, Staffs, Porterage etc and if you are planning to buy yourself one then it is strictly recommended to carry ample amount of fuel from Kargil or Leh and also other necessary provisions. As the weather conditions in Ladakh is quite harsh, the habitants also minimizes. Along your way you can cherish some Tsampa and fresh Yoghurt. Cooking gas and Kerosene should always be kept handy, as you cannot trust on the village sources.

Clean Environment :

As the weather condition at Ladakh is very delicate, the surviving phenomenon depends upon the Lands ecological factor. It is always advised that the trekkers keep the environment clean. Before leaving the camp, one must ensure that no polythene wrappers, other garbage and plastic containers should be burned and other things should be buried properly.

Necessities about Trekking at this Place:

For trekking at this place, the physical fitness is not the only factor, a trekker should always be prepared to fight the over exhausting harsh climate. The weather is always fluctuating in day and night even during the summers. The daytime is pretty hot due to the barren land and the desert effect, and in the evening the climate lowers down, woolen clothes are also needed at this point of time. It is always recommended to keep an anorak or a pull over handy. A hard pair of shoes with synthetic or rubber soles for tight grip, a sleeping bag and thick cotton socks should always be carried. A waterproof tent, cooking gear and provisions should be carried in case of trekking problems across Trans Mountains or mountain passes.

First aid kits toiletries should include moisturizers, water-purifying tablets, Lip salve, sunscreen lotions and medicines. Drinking water should be carried in abundance, as you cannot be sure of the weather conditions. Flashlight with extra batteries, a pair of sunglasses and sun hat should also be carried.

Shopping:

The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has arranged shops in Srinagar, Kargil and Leh where you can shop for insulated ground sheets, rucksacks, sleeping bags, trekking shoes, tow man tents.

River Rafting :

Indus and its tributaries offer you with various river rafting options. The stretches are professionally guided between Spituk, Saspol.As soon as you pass Saspol the river is very rough, and it is very difficult without professionals and skilled participants to handle the pressure. The most smoothest stretch is Karu, which is known for training purpose,for the one who attempts river rafting. It is an ideal stretch for scenic floating for the visitors.

Recently river rafting in Indus river has flourished very generously as most of the tourists attempts to try this adventurous water sport.There are many river rafting agencies which offers attractive packages.

River Running :

River Running is one of the most exciting sports and is located on the Zanskar between Nimo and Padum.This sport is only suitable for the one who is well prepared for many days of river running and halting in camps with no basic facilities in the wild areas. The tourist who is interested in participating has to be trained rafters and all the arrangements should be handled by a professional agency. All the arrangements for the rescue coverage should be made before hand.

Mountain Climbing :

The most famous area for mountain climbing is the Nun-Kun Massif (Himalayan Ranges).The range is easily accessible from the (Kargil-Padum road) and is one of the most beautiful climbing destination. Advance Booking is done years ahead. The highest summits are Nun (7135m), Kun (7077m).

The nearest area to Leh is (Stok-Khangri Massif) which is located in the south side of Leh.The base camp  approximately takes 2 days from Stok village.The highest peak is Stok-Khangri( 6150m), the view from this peak is just spectacular.

Other options for Mountaineering :

Matho West-5950m, Kantak-5275m and Gulap Khangi are some of the other peaks in this area. There are many unknown peaks, which offer height like 5500-6400m, which is also accessible for climbing.The Karakoram ranges which lies in the north side of Leh, over the Nubra Valley and Ladakh range. There are many restricted peaks over here, which needs special permission from the government of India to access. The most important summits includes Saser 1 (7415m), Saser 2(7513m) and Saser 3(7495m).

Best Season :

The ideal time to climb is (June - September), As during this time there is no rain in Ladakh.To climb all the peaks foreigners have to take permission from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. A liaison officer is always there with every climbing team .Fees is allotted according to the popularity and the height of the peak. For the processing application, minimum period of 6 months is required. All the authorized expeditions include sufficient rescue coverage on account of illness and accidents.
