Gustor is a major festival celebrated in Ladakh.This festival is celebrated with much pomp and merrymaking in the Himalayan City. The city becomes a live wire during the celebration and is also a very famous festival. Gustor is observed in the month of August. Tourists specially come to Ladakh during this time to advert this festival. In Ladakh, maximum number of festivals are based on the Gompas and monasteries.Shachukul is a famous monastry in Ladakh.This monastery is situated at a height of 14000 ft.The festival is observed in this monastery.
The meaning of Gustor is Sacrifice of the 29th day.The festivals starts with a different dance performance that attracts many tourist from outside. The Dance showcases victory over evil from the black hat dancers.The followers of the Tibetan Buddhism takes part in this zealous and joyous festival.
This festival goes on for 2 days and comes to an end with diffusion of the sacrificial cake known as Storma in this place.The diffusion is done by the leader of the dancers.The process is known as Argham which constitutes the victory of the black hat dances over the evil forces.The Black hat dancers decorates themselves in different types of masks which symbolizes the eternal patron divinities of the (Geluk-pa)and former Buddhist Divinities(Dharampalas).The dancers also observes the death of a Tibetan traitor Lang dar ma in the 9th century by a Buddhist monk.
In some other monasteries an image describing evil spirit is burnt at the cease of the festival. |
