The beautiful valley of Jammu and Kashmir bears a war-torn history as several rulers have invaded and ruled its land. The existence of the state was discovered as Mughal Emperor Akbar invaded the state in 1586. Before Akbar, Turk ruler Yusuf Khan was the ruler of the state. Akbar’s appointed governor Ramchandra I used to rule the state. The rule by Ramchandra and his descendants continued until the state was conquered by Sikhs in 1780. During 1845, the first Anglo-Sikh war broke out in Jammu and Kashmir and it was followed up by Battle of Sobraon the next year. After these fierce battles Gulab Singh and his descendants rule the state uninterruptedly until the end of British rule in 1947.
Post-independent disturbances in Kashmir created mayhem in the state and it also led to a nosedive in the number of tourist visit in Kashmir. The sour diplomatic relation between Pakistan and India is the reason for all the disturbances. Till date there are certain selective places in Kashmir that are subject to terror attacks and panic. |
