Jammu and Kashmir Places to see TRANSPORT


Though the state of Jammu and Kashmir is known for its rugged mountains and ice laden peaks that make it difficult for the commuters to access, yet the transport system of the state has been built efficiently for the sake of both local residents and the visitors to travel form one place to the other. There are many modes of transport in Jammu and Kashmir that are available.

The transportation facilities are provided by JKSRTC, state's road transport system. Depending upon the comfort and needs of people, this corporation provides affordable and economical services. The buses form this state run to Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. KKSRTC provides tourists buses to various locations including the nearby states of Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab. Most of the tourists buses that are run are hi-tech, semi deluxe, super-deluxe. Ordinary buses are also available for tourist transport in Jammu and Kashmir.

There are buses running to various districts and deep down villages that are located in far flung and remote areas. Excellent services are also available for traveling to the nearby states.

Transport in Jammu :

Jammu is situated on National Highway number 1-A which is connected to almost all parts of the country. Delhi is situated at a distance of 586 kilometers form Jammu; Mansar at 62 km, Manali at 428 km, and Katra at 48 km. Interstate buses going from Jammu to Delhi, Shimla, Manali, Jalander, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Ambala and Amritsar. Run on daily basis. There are two types of buses that are available for going to Srinagar. Buses with the tag of A -class reach here from railway station while those that are of B category start form bus stand.

In addition to it, tourist taxis are available on share basis. For visiting local areas, one can hire taxis from STTA (Special Tourist Taxi Association). A particular tour that is available for site-seeing purposes takes the tourists to spots like Ranbireshwar Temple, Bagh-e-Bahu, Dogra Art Gallery, and Amar Mahal Museum. The tourism department also arranges for luxury coaches which can be booked beforehand.

In order to reach here by trains, several passenger trains are available form the nearby states including Delhi. Special trains are available during the festival season. For passengers intending to reach here by flight can take planes form Chandigarh, Srinagar, and Delhi.

Transport in Srinagar :

In order to reach Srinagar through bus, the transport authorities have provided buses to and from the nearby states and cities like Chandigarh, Phalgan, Delhi, and Leh. In order to reach here by trains, one can come by Jammu Railway Station which lies about 300 km away. This railway station is connected o all the main cities of India. Direct trains can be taken form Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai. The Air transport system is also well developed. Flights that run between Srinagar and other states like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Mumbai are available.

Kashmir Railway :

This railway line connects the state to other parts of the country. It is an economical mode of transport in Jammu and Kashmir. Starting from Jammu, the railway covers approximately 345 km to reach Baramullah city. The route covered is quite rugged and is exposed to extreme climatic conditions. The construction on this railway line is not yet complete and the project is categorized into 4 major sections that covered Jammu to Baramullah while going through stations like Udhampur, Katra, and Qazigund. The construction of this railway line is one of the most difficult railway projects. The extreme climatic conditions that involve heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures posed great challenges in its construction.

Kashmir railway passes through several bridges and tunnels, many of which are too long. One of the most challenges that involved high precision and accuracy on part of engineering is that for construction of 1315 m long bridge over Chenab River. When completed, it will be one of its own kind and highest structure of railway in the entire world. The coaches of their railway are provided with comfortable seats and are air-conditioned. In addition to this, luxuries like heating faculties, sliding doorways and reclining seats are provided to the passengers.

At the driving end, special arrangement has been made in the form of a snow-cutter that removes the snow cluttered over the tracks. Special facilities like pneumatic suspension, public information system, and separate compartment for physically-disabled form the prominent features of Kashmir railway.

Other rail facilities that are available for reaching Kashmir include Jammu Express that can be taken from Pune; Himgiri Express from Howarh, and Jammu Tawi from Delhi.

Transport in Ladakh :

The main highway that is available for accessing Leh is that connecting Srinagar to Leh. Stretched over a distance of more than 400 kilometers, this road covers Sonmarg, Zoziala Pass, and Kargil town. One can also reach here through road going between Manali and Leh which crosses a number of passes like Rohtang and Taglang. JKSTRC operates buses between Leh and Srinagar and thus facilitate transport in Jammu and Kashmir.

The best way to reach Ladakh is by air. Regular flights can be taken from Delhi, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Srinagar. Other modes of transport in Ladakh include mini buses and coaches. The taxis are also available at fixed rates.

Transport in Jammu and Kashmir has been made easier by the extensive road, rail and air transport systems.
