Hemis National Park is situated close to Leh which falls in the Ladakh Region of Jammu & Kashmir. The area covered by the National Park is around 600 sq kms. The Prime attraction of the park is the different and dangerous animals found here which include Bharal, Shapu and snow Leopard. The best time one can view these Mammal is from the month of September to March.
The Hemis is a high altitude National Park which has the flow of two valleys and that goes and meets the Indus River. The condition of this Park is very desolate and bleak. The growth of vegetation is very poor due to the terrain that is rock with the cover of thin soil.
The Flora, Fauna and Avifauna :
The area is surrounded by rocks and is barren. There is very less vegetation possible here. There are 10 species of mammals found here which are very rare that include Shapu, Great Tibetan Ship, Bharal, Snow Leopard and Ibex. Himalayan snow Cock, Golden Oriole and Snow Partridge are some of the avifauna species found and in lower altitude these species are not seen.
Season for Tourists :
The best time to view this place and the mammals here is from September to May and to view birds is from March to May and September to December. There are a number of campaign sites in this National Park and can be reached by road from Leh.
