Located centrally, Barnala is an agrarian city that is known for its villages like Dhanaual, Uppli, Rajgarh, and Pherwahi. Its local industries have played a great role stabilizing the economy of the city. The city is famous for its textile industry.

Down the Lane :

In ancient times, the city was called Anahatgarh. The Muslims that lived in the adjoining areas used to plunder the village now and then; tormented villagers sought the help of Baba Gama. When the villagers went to ask for a helping hand, Gama was not present at his residence; his brother Ala Singh forced the Muslims to vacate the place and he himself started living there. This led to the establishment of Barnala. He made the place his capital and amalgamated a number of surrounding villages in it.

Story Behind the Name :

Several theories have been proposed to support the nomenclature of this city. According to one of them, Vaaran was a region that used to get storms very frequently; the word "Barnala" was coined for a place where the phenomenon of storms was very common. Another theory states that Ala Singh constructed a Fort here the fort had a structure within it called "Baahuli" and was commonly called "Baain"; hence Baain Wala became Barnala.

Surjit Singh Barnala :

He is an eminent personality of the city; known for his successful tenure a governor of 4 Indian states.

Jatinder Singh :


A famous name in Electronics as well as in Software Engineering, Jatinder Singh belongs to this city.

Som Dutt Sharma :

Another popular name that is associated with the city is Som Dutt who served as Tourist Minister of Punjab he is known to have influenced villagers by his will power.

Clubs :

There are numerous clubs that lie all over the city; Rotary club, Barnala Club; Lions club are a few names in this regard.

Attractions :

Sekha :

Situated at about seven kilometers from the city, Sekha is a village worth visiting. The village is laced with all the basic facilities that are available at reachable distance. The place is easily accessible as it is located on the rail line connecting the city to Patiala.

Bazars :

Other prominent places that form part of the city are Purana Bazar, Sadar Bazar, Handiaya Bazar, College Road etc.

The city is flourishing at a fast pace and a number of residential complexes have erupted here and there.

Industrial Houses :

A number of renowned industrial houses have been established here. A few examples in this regard are Trident Group, Malwa Cotton Mills, and Standard Combine etc.
