Adilabad, named after the ruler of Bijapur, is a blend of multiple cultures. The historical importance of the city is evident from the fact that it was ruled by several dynasties like Satvahans, Chalukyas, Mauryas, and Mughals. The diverse cultures existing here are the presented by Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi, and Malayalee people.
The city rests at an altitude of 866 feet from seal level. It is watered by rivers Penganga, Godavari, and Pranahitha etc. Earlier called Ethlabad, the district was established in 1905. Due to the presence of numerous rivers here, a number of water projects have been initiated at this place. These include Kadem, Satnalavagu, and Chelamalavagu projects. Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary : About 50 % of the area is covered with forests. Three wildlife sanctuaries that make part of the city are Pranahita, Shivaram, and Kawal. Pranahita is sprawled over an area of 136 square kilometers about 2.1sq kilometers of which is part of a reserved forest. The trees here are mostly dry deciduous and are one of the oldest one of Deccan Plateau. Here, you can hope to see a wide range of flora and fauna. Animals like leopard, Indian Otter, Tiger, Porcupine, Palm Civet, Hyena, and Forest Cats. There are myriad opportunities for bird watchers and ornithologists as birds like herons, ducks, and teals are found in abundance here.
Shivaran Sanctuary : Another delight for nature enthusiasts is Shivaram Sanctuary. The place attracts the tourists by the presence of exotic fauna. The population of crocodiles here is enormous. Among the other animals that form part of this nice sanctuary include Monkey, deer, cheetal, sloth bear, langur, panther, and foxes. The flora of the park is also quiet varied.
Kawal Sanctuary : This wild life reserve of Adilabad is home to diverse species of plants including bamboo, teak, etc. The wild animals that inhabit this land include barking deer, sloth bear, panther, cheetal, and tiger. A number of members of Reptilian species can be found here in the jungle premises.
Mahatma Gandhi Park : This lush green park comprises of well planned lawns. The place is nice for picnickers. You can spend a nice time in morning as well as in evening.
St. Joseph's Church : Adilabad's Joseph Church is a worth visiting site. The area is adorned beautified with numerous plants and edifices. Christian devotees arrive here from several parts of India.
