Ugadi is also known as the new year of the Tamils, the populated caste in Andhra Pradesh. The one who resides in the northern side of Vindhya Hills celebrates this day as Barhaspatyamana and the one residing in the southern side celebrates this day as Chandramana or Sauramana.
There’s a peculiar ritual involves with this festival as it is different with each and every sects of (Brahmin) and these manifests have turned out be different dates and month when the different sects celebrate this festival. Some have their calculation according to the lunar system and the others through the solar system. There is a Tamil New Year, Telugu New Year and a New Year.
According to the sect of Chandramana Ugadi is commenced on the fortnight known as the Shukla Paksha of the 1st month known as the Chaitra Masa in the 1st season that is spring known as Vasanta Ritu.As all the important and the first commencement of the year as the new year is celebrated.
It is said that the creator of this universe Lord Brahma had started his creation on this day known as Chaitra Suddha Padhyami also known as Ugadi Day. This theory is also supported by the renowned Indian Mathematician Bhaskaracharya with his calculation as Ugadi to be the beginning of new month, new day and New Year. As also, the spring season marks the beginning of new leaves, shoots and plants. The vibrancy of verdant fields and life, lands full of colorful flowers and green grasses marks well being and prosperity.
As the Ugadi arrives, the sweet and mild fragrance of Jasmine is spread. Big garlands of Jasmine flower are being offered to God in this season. Also you can spot it on the braids of the Indian women.
Ugadi marks the beginning of new lunar calendar of the Hindus. On this sacred day priests chants mantras and also makes predictions for the year ahead. The Panchangasravanam also known as listening to the yearly prediction was earlier done at the sacred temples and the town squares. But as the technology developed its been hired on the satellite sets and now a days you can hear an see the predictions live sitting in your living rooms.
Preparations as such begins months ago with cleaning of house, new clothes, buying other important items, sweets and making of other relishing meals for the day.Ugadi is celebrated with great gaiety and fervor in the states like Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra this festival is known as Gudi Padwa and In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh this festival is known as Ugadi.
On this day people get up early in the morning before dawn and take shower after which they decorate the courtyard of their house with mango leaves. As the garland of mango leaves are tied on the door top, this signifies well being and good crop.Cocunuts and Mango leaves are used only on sacred occasions to appease God.
In the rural area people, splash cow dung on the ground and also draw colorful rangoli to commemorate the beginning of this festival. This is a very common site in the villages. People also seek blessings of their respective god and then from the elder of the family before they start celebrating the New Year. They pray for Prosperity, health, success and wealth. It is also believed that it is the best time to start off with new ventures.
Special Delicacies :
Spring is the season for the King of Fruit, that is Mango, the fragrance of the ripe mangoes spreads all around and the blossomed neem tree purifies the area. There are many special dishes made by adding Jaggery that is made from fresh sugar cane.
Ugadi Pachchadi is a special dish that is compulsorily made from pieces of raw mangos. Neem flowers, tamarind and jaggery.The significance behind this dish is that life is a mixture of sorrow, joy, bad and good and we have to face this. After setting of the sun, again the next day it rises. All the experiences are a part of life.nd it is also promised that inspite of bad situations in this year accept with positive approach. Men should ascent above happiness, sorrow, failure and success. The special dishes like Pulihora, Bobbaltu and other dishes made up of raw mangoes are prepared in Andhra Pradesh. In Karnataka, Holige, Puligure are prepared. In Maharashtra Sweet, rotis also known as Puran Poli are famous.
Kavi Sammelanam :
Kavi Sammelanam also known as Poetry Recitation is also held. This is a typical feature of Telugu Ugadi.Ugadi is also the festival for the poetry lovers and the poets. Many famous poets attend this festival to read their new work and discuss it amongst the other poets present at the Kavi Sammelan.The subjects ranges from politics to lifestyles and modern trends.Ugadi Sammelan is considered to be the launching pad for many of the new budding poets. As the performances are carried, live on the Doordarshan, Hyderabad and All India Radio, Hyderabad. Poets from all walks of life and hues come here to participate in this cultural fests. The subjects range from satirical, literary, melancholic, political, reformist and comic.
Ugadi thus is a festival with many shades. It welcomes New Year with contentment and joy also not forgetting the sorrows and giving us a new positive hope to move forward in our life.
