The fascinating ancient rock engravings based on the huge walls of the caves have drawn lots of attention of historians and archaeologists worldwide. It has been assumed that these caves are dated back some 5000 years and the caves of Edakkal have been used in different stages in the History of man. The name Edakkal means a stone in the middle. So we can make the structure of the caves forged by huge boulders straddling causing cleft in the rocky valley. The cave is two storey where the lower chambers measure about eighteen feet and can be accessed by 5x4 feet opening. There is a passage that lies just opposite to the way from where the entrance is placed and from this place you can go upto the next level, this is a tiny aperture. The interior of this cave is 96 feet .At the right hand side there is a huge gap from where light comes inside.

According to the legends it is said that this cave has been formed as the sons of Ram, Luv and Kush had fired arrows .It is also said that lord Ram had killed Ravanas sister at this Place.

The Superintendent of the Police Mr. Fawcett had discovered this cave who was also an enthusiast of ancient history.Mr Fawcett had discovered this cave as he was strolling around this place in the year 1894.According to him this place was inhabited by the Neolithic People  as there were many types of drawing and stone carvings belonging to that period and also engravings of Neolithic Celts.
