Marayoor is located 40 km away from the city of Munnar.This is the only place in entire Kerala that has a treasure of naturally grown sandalwood trees. This place also depicts a great mythological influence as Lord Ram and Goddess Sita had visited this place during their Vanavasam and Goddess Sita took bath here in one of the ponds and is also believed that during the Vanavasam of the Pandavas, they had stayed in this place so the name Maranjirunnaoor was kept and further known as Marayoor.The depiction of Stone Age civilization has been found here. The paintings related to the prehistoric times are also found. The sandal wood factory, the caves also called as muniyars in the local language with relics, murals and Children’s park placed across the covering of the only banyan tree attracts tourist to a major extent.Rajiv Gandhi National Park and the Thoovanan Waterfalls are located nearby.Marayoor engages a huge area on the lofty slopes of the western Ghats, Idukki.This place is known to be the burial ground of Dolmenoids.
Dolmens :
Also called as Dolmens cist relies back to Megalithic period. These popular dolmenoids were the entombment compartment made out of 4 gravels placed on the rims and enclosed by a 5th gravel known as cap stone. A few of these renowned Dolmenoids comprises of quite a few entombment compartment, while others possess a courtyard hollowed out in mushy laterite and creased on the surface with the granite chunks. The slabs are enclosed with capstones. Many Dolmens are found around the region of the ancient Siva place of worship also known as (Thenkasinatha Place of Worship) at Kovilkadavu which is positioned on the river banks of Pambar River. You will also find the exclusive Megalithic period rock paintings swayed on the southern-west hill of the upland featuring the stream, which attracts hoards of visitors. This Dolmen, which belongs to the Stone Age, also possesses some of the Iron Age dolmens at the left hand side of Pambar River.
Rock Paintings :
Primordial rock pictures are elements of Marayur legacy at the Attala, Ezhuthu Guha that means cave of inscriptions, Manala and Kovilkadavu placed in Marayur. Attala is positioned in the extreme western part of this place and you can see above ninety beautifully painted patterns. The ethnic rock pictures of (Attala) are located in a massive east facing astound cover which is One Thousand and Fifty meters above the level of sea. The paintings that you will find here are mostly ancient abstract designs and few of them possesses animal and human figure. The Ezhuthu Guha or Ezhuthu Cave rock paintings can be sited in The Sandalwood Reserve Forest of Koodakavu (Marayur) that is positioned at a height of thousand mts above sea level.The area is mostly sited as the popular rock-painting site in the state of Kerala attracting hoards of tourists from the country as well as the world. The town of Kovilkadavu is located at a distance of 5 kms away from Marayur. 10 painted designs can be seen painted over the southern west hill .You can have a look at the popular rock painting which can be seen in the Wildlife Sanctuary of Chinnar. The main feature of this rock painting is that a clear picture of man and deer is portrayed. |
