Valliyoorkavu Temple at Wayanad is located at a short distance from Mananthavady. Famous for the worship of goddess Bhagwathy who is manifested in the three forms here, the temple holds a special significance for the tribal communities of Wayanad.
The temple is situated amidst picturesque backdrop which is marked by the presence of Kabani River. The goddess is worshipped in the forms of Bhadrakali, Vanadurga, and Jala Durga at the temple premises. Occupying a grand area of about 1 acre, the temple is visited by a number of devotees form Kerala.
Important Festival :
An important Valliyoorkavu festival is an inherent part of this sacred temple. Highly revered by the tribal community, you can have a glimpse of this special occasion which is carried for a period of 14 days. Celebrated in the months of March or April, this special event is marked with joy and gaiety. You will have the opportunity to watch the traditional dance and music belonging to the tribes.
The festivities at Valliyoorkavu Temple, are characterized by the ritual of Kalamezhuthu which is an important temple art. It involves drawing of colorful drawings on the floor and filling of colors in them. Artists draw kalams dedicated to deities like Bhagvathy, Sastha, and many others. Emphasis is laid on detailing and choice of colors. The items that are used for drawing include race, paddy husk, turmeric, and leaves of green plants. The rooms meant for Kalamezhuthu are decorated with flowers and garlands. On the final day of the festival, several folk arts can be enjoyed by you. The Music is played using percussion instruments.
