Nilgiri Mountains :

The meaning of the Nilgiri is Blue Mountains. The whole part of Blue Mountains contains the current Nilgiri's district. Blue mountain hill's heights are different between two thousand two hundred eighty and two thousand two hundred ninety meters. Among the hills of the Nilgiri Mountains, the biggest peak is Doddabetta, the height of this peak is about two thousand six hundred twenty three meters.

Nilgiri Mountain is located on the 2 Ghat's junction; this comes in the Sahaydri hills. Hill Stations Located In Nilgiri :

Coonoor :


This is one of the major hill stations of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the southern and eastern side of the Doddabetta range, the altitude location of this hill station is about one thousand eight hundred fifty eight meters, over the sea level. This hill station is 2nd highest hill station. From the Ooty hill station the distance of Coonoor is about nineteen kilometers and Coonoor village is important place for the tea garden, that’s why the weather of this place is always cool and pleasant.

Udhagamandalam :

This is a Nilgiri districts headquarter; this hill station is majorly popular as hill station's queen within the tourist people. It is famous as Ooty; located on the distance of the one thousand five kilometers far from the Coimbatore. The prime attractive features of this hill station are Doddabetta peak & Botanical garden.

Kotagiri :

It is little bit far from the Ooty, the distance is about sixteen kilometers. This hill station is very aged among the other hill stations of the Nilgiri Mountains. It is located on the altitude location of the one thousand nine hundred fifty meters. During the British time, Kotagiri hill station was a hill resort, in the 1819 century. This hill station location is more silent than the Ooty. Here you can give visit to the Kodanad viewpoint, Elk falls and Catherine falls etc.

Major Attractive Spots :


Ooty Lake :

This is a artificial Lake, made by a man. During the year of 1824; the man who created this Lake was Mr. Sullivan. Lake Garden is extra attractive feature of this place.

Botanical Garden :


This is one of the prime attractive features, which tourist people majorly visit. Over the fifty acres Botanical garden has been stretched and it has been placed in the Dodabetta peak's lower slopes. This garden is a loftiest spot within the Ooty hill station. Botanical garden was established during the 1848, by the Tweeddale & Marquis.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary :

This wildlife sanctuary has been situated on the place where the Eastern and Western Ghats of the Nilgiri Hills merge to each other. The highway of Mysore & Ooty passes through Mudumalai Sanctuary. The Mayyar River runs in between the Bandipur and Mudumalai, that’s why they became separate. The size of the sanctuary is about three hundred twenty one kilometers side; this sanctuary includes the one hundred three kilometers area of National Park. It contains different blended flat land, valleys, swamps and grassland. Despite the huge range of bird life and animal, it also includes rich fauna; all these elements made Mudumalai place very much famous in the whole country.

Dolphin's Nose :


This location of Nilgiri is located around twelve kilometers far from the hill station Coonoor. This place is very amazing and unbelievable, it has been created by the rock; from the shape of this rock it got the name Dolphin's nose. Dolphin's nose displays wide panorama that includes the Catherine falls.

Doddabetta :

This is a biggest peak of Nilgiri mountains, it serves a delightful view of the hilly ranges, plains and plateaus. From Ooty, Doddabetta is far about ten kilometers. You can easily reach at this place because it has very well transportation road, through which you can go the to peak area.

Laws Falls :


While roaming within the Nilgiri Mountains, you can go for the picnic, at this beautiful spot. This place got the name after the Lt. Colonel Law. Majorly this person had made this Coonoor Ghat. From the Coonoor, it is about five kilometers away, for that you have to go below the Coonoor, this comes on the Mettupalayam road. 180 feet is a height of Laws falls.

Pykara :

It is located around twenty one kilometers from the Ooty. This place contains few attractive spots, which are nicely maintained like Toda settlements, wildlife habitat, fenced shoals also undisturbed grassy. Large numbers of tourists visit this place, from the beauty magnet of Pykara no one can stay away, tourist people automatically get pulled through the attractive factors of the Pykara.

Kodanad Viewpoint :

It is situated about sixteen kilometers from the Kotagiri hill station. Here you will get see a magnificent view of the entire area, Nilgiri's eastern slopes, plains.

National Park & Mukkurthi Park :

From the Ooty, these parks has been located on the distance of forty kilometers, here you will get to see the very delightful peak, which is known as Mukkurthi. Mukkurthi National Park is situated over the Nilgri plateau's southern corner. Another prime peaks are Nilgiri and Kollaribetta. On western Ghat's western side, the silent valley has been situated; this is a special element which has been served to the tourists and visitors.

Visit :

You can get down on the Ooty railway station this hill station is very well connected to the Mettupalayam, the distance between these two destinations is forty seven kilometers. this is straightway joint to the Chennai and Coimbatore. Here you will get the chance to travel through the popular toy train; this train is nicely linked to the Coonoor and Mettupalayam.

If you prefer to travel by air then, land on the Coimbatore airport, it is about on thousand five kilometers far from the Ooty. This is a closest airport. There are daily flights, which comes from the Cochin, Chennai, Trivandrum and Bangalore.

As per other places of Tamil Nadu state Nilgiri Mountain is also nicely connected to prime cities and towns of state. The facility of busses is very good at this place, it is linked wi the Bangalore, Mysore, Trichy, Calicut, Madurai, Coimbatore, Palghat, Kanyakumari.
