The chequered history of Goa has brought people of several ethnic races, from India and abroad, to settle down in this small land. This history has consequently impacted the languages in Goa and thus Goa happens to be a multi-lingual state. Presently, there are two primary languages in Goa; Konkani, and Marathi. English language is widely used is India since Goa is a tourist spot. National as well as international tourists find English language the most convenient medium of communication in Goa.

Official Language of Goa :

The war infested past of Goa has allowed a host of languages to breed within this state. The official language of Goa has also changed following the change of administration. Until 1961 when Portuguese colonizers ruled this state, Portuguse used to be the official language of Goa. After the liberation of Goa, the official language of this state has been changed to Konkani. Konkani language is written in Devnagri script.

The Spectrum of Languages in Goa
:

Being a famous international tourist spot, Goa has welcomed English language widely for tourist’s convenience. Nowadays, English is widely used in Goa, both in spoken and written form. After the end of Portuguese rule in this state, Portuguese language has become almost extinct in Goa. However, the language is still in use by people of older generation only. The two major languages, Konkani and Marathi are used by majority of the people in Goa. These two languages survived the long and painstaking rule of Portuguese through coaching conducted secretly at temples and public places of villages during that era. Marathi language is used mainly for official purpose and there are many schools of Marathi medium in this state. Hindi being the national language of India is known by majority of Goans. Hence, there are practically four languages that are in use namely, Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and English.
