The construction of the Church of St. Monica in Goa took a pretty long time. The construction of this massive church began in 1606 and lasted till 1627, when it was finally inaugurated. The church served as a convent to more than 150 nuns, who were called the daughters of St. Monica.

The Church of St. Monica in Goa kingly stands with its three-storey structure which shows you the glory of the 15th century castles. The interiors and exteriors of the church add to the glory of this sacred shrine. The Church of St. Monica in Goa displays a unique and flawless blend of Composite and Tuscan-Corinthian exteriors. The inner frames of the church showcase the elegant Doric work. Such works of finery are rare and one should not lose the opportunity to see it in reality.
Things to see :
This church was once filled with exquisite murals on the ceilings and walls, which were later spoiled due to lack of maintenance. Recently, the church authorities have restored many of those murals. The huge and gorgeous dome of the church is designed beautifully with murals. You will get to see the same art work at the St. Paul’s Cathedral in Vatican.
You can see a remarkable painting of several saints which are currently displayed at the basement of the church. The striking artistry of each painting will leave you undoubtedly spell bound.
Don’t miss to see the painting of Dona Maria de Corm. It is said that Dona Maria de Corm was a venerable lady who was granted with wounds on her hands and feet, which resembles those of Jesus Christ, after her death!

About the church :
There is a dark history of this church about penance room. It is said that within the penance rooms of this convent, penitent voluntarily tormented themselves with ropes, iron nails and leather straps. |
