During the time of British Raj, it was the capital of Idar state in the Mahi kantha agency under the Rathore Rajput rule. Idar was earlier known as Ilva Durga and finds it name in Mahabharata.
Idar is located in the Aravalli range on the southern edge which is naturally protected by hills. Idar town is situated on the top of the hill and is very beautiful. The fort and the town both are beautiful. The entrance of Idar is through clock tower of three stories. The dome at the top is semi circular with a big arch. There is a bazaar on the both sides of the road which lead to Idar and ends at the foothills.
The stones of the fort are finely carved with beautiful balconies. The foliated arches, pillars, frescos and brackets are beautifully designed with great ornamentation that takes us to the royal buildings of Bikaner and Jodhpur.
The other buildings like Swaminarayan Temple, Khokhanath Mahadev, Vallabhacharya Temple are interesting and worth watching. Rani Talav is at the side of this fort and is a huge water tank to store the water coming from the hill. Dolat Niwas is a famous castle built by Maharaja Dolatsinhji which is 700 steps away and that has a picturesque view of the Idar Fort. The place was a beautifully designed seven storyed building and was a perfect resting place after a long journey, but now this place is abandoned.
