Uparkot fort is built in 319 BC. It is built impressively and is located in the middle of the town. It is said that the fort was covered for around 300 years and then rediscovered in 976 AD. Uparkot fort was earlier known as Revath Nagri. Mount Revath had been cut and Revath Nagri was established on which there is Uparkot.
The History of the fort sounds to be interesting as it says that the fort was besieged 16 times over a period of 800 years. There is a Mosque in the fort built by Mohammad Begde. The Mosque has escape routes that comes out of the city 30 kms away to 4 different locations – The one comes out at Bodidar village near Unna, Vadhwan Village Surendranagar District, Somnath and Majiwada village.
Tourists enter the fort through a large gate. Some walls in the fort are 20 m high. After entering the fort, on the left you will reach Jama Masjid that has 140 pillars supporting its ceiling.
Further down the road there are Buddhist caves that are carved into the rocky hill. To the north of the fort there is Kapra Kodia Caves and to the south of the fort there is Babupyana Caves.
There is a huge cannon of fifteen foot that is said to be made in Egypt in 1531.The most interesting part of the fort is two large step vavs (well) that belong to the 11 century. The one is Navghan kuva that descends 50 m down to the well with circular steps. The other well is known as Adi Chadi Vav that descends up to 170 steps down.
