You can make your experience of Gujrat rich and colorful by taking a trip at the Calico museum of textiles. This museum is located in the heart of Ahmedabad, and boasts to have an enormous collection of fabrics.

The site of this museum has a great aesthetic value since it is placed in the palatial Sarabhai house. The Calico museum of textiles nestles amidst thick greenery that offers it a striking look.

Things to see :

Calico museum of textiles preserves some of the best Indian fabrics. Some of the collection are five centuries old and are in a good state of preservation.  You can see the finest fabrics of India in this museum which are woven, spun and painted in this place.

Some of the notable textiles of this museum are exquisite artwork and designs made on a variety of kalamkaris, pichhwais, silk, Patolas, bandhnis etc. Heavily designed floor spreads, tent canopies, and valuable brocades are also preserved here.

The entire museum is divided in various galleries for the convenience of its visitors. Religious textile gallery consists of an extensive assortment of the garments of Vallabha Sampradaya. These textiles were mostly used during the 15th century. The spiritual ambience of the Religious Gallery draws a large number of visitors. This gallery also includes a historical textile gallery, which will show you the splendor of the Mogul empire. This gallery preserves finely crafted Mogul carpets, statues of Mogul warriors.

Apart from textiles you will also find other articles of great significance in this museum. The most notable of these articles are bronze and sandstone figures of Jain icons.

The classy part of this museum consists of hand woven fabrics, colors, frescos belonging to 15th to 16th century. You can feel the grandeur of the bygone era while scanning through the Moghul inscriptions and Jain religious details.

History :

This museum was established in 1949. Originally this museum was housed inside the Calico mills but later on as the collectibles increased it was shifted to Sarabhai House.
