Spread over a small area of one square kilometer, Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is a perfect destination for those who want to spend time watching  and admiring some of the most colorful and exotic species of birds. One can have a delightful experience while exploring the habitats of a wide variety of local and migratory birds.

The travelers coming to Porbandar Bird Sanctuary have numerous options to choose from as they wander through this picturesque place. The sanctuary is stuffed with birds of all forms, sizes and shapes. Their gaudy hues and bright-colored wings are worth admiring. The forest flaunts some of the most beautiful species of birds that flaunt their plumages and make chirpy sounds much to the delight of the visitor. Not only these, their multiple textures and varied patterns of these lovely creatures can make one spell bound.

Attractions at Sanctuary :

Watch Diverse Avifauna : Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is home to diverse species of birds including wildfowl, flamingo, spoonbill, heron, coot, pintail, egret, pelican, teal, avocet, and many more. One can also explore the forest to find other species like tern, cormorant, duck, geese, shank, jacanas, shoveller etc. There are whopping 150 species of resident and migratory birds that are known to survive here.

Ecotourism : Though the place does not have any wide variety of vegetation, yet there are some plant species that have been introduced to support ecotourism. The place has gained unique distinction of providing legal protection to its vast avifauna. A lake that contains freshwater is significant for supporting ecotourism as it attracts several migratory birds every year.

Other Attractions :
The place is notable for vast population of flamingoes which are the main attraction here.

History :

Initially, the premises of the sanctuary were under the authorization of Porbandar Municipality. Later, the land came under the Wildlife Act of 1972 that allowed the Forest Department to take over. Soon the area was declared a wildlife sanctuary.

The sanctuary is located within the suburbs of Porbandar city and is a perfect example of the harmonious relationship existing between nature and man. The place is best to visit in winter when the onlookers have a chance to watch a large number of birds.

Do's and Don'ts :

Flash photography is prohibited as it can scare birds. One must not shout or make loud noises at the premises. Pets are not allowed to enter. One must watch the birds from a distance.
